In short
- From a description. "Draw a 6000×4000 mm room plan, 200 walls, a 900 door in the left wall, a 1500 window opposite, add dimensions" — Claude computes the coordinates itself and draws in the drawing's units.
- From a photo, scan or sketch. Paste the picture into the chat — a dimensioned sketch is redrawn exactly from the numbers, a picture without dimensions is traced into lines.
- One confirmation, one step. Before creating anything Claude lists what it will draw; Undo reverts it all at once.
- Free, open source AGPL-3.0, AutoCAD 2025 and 2026. Drawing from a description and from images arrived in version 1.0.8.
What it draws from a description
Lines and polylines, rectangles, circles, arcs, ellipses, splines, hatches, text and MText, dimensions (linear, aligned, radial), leaders and blocks with attributes. It creates layers itself, with colour and linetype. Repeated symbols — fixtures, sockets, panels — become blocks placed at the pitch you need.
Example requests:
- "Draw a 6000×4000 mm room plan, 200 walls, a 900 door in the left wall, a 1500 window in the right one, dimensions."
- "Make a block for fixture SKR-2: a 1000×28 rectangle with a centre line and a POS attribute."
- "Place 6 of those fixtures along the wall at a 1200 pitch starting from point 500,300."
- "Rotate the selected lines 15° about their centre and copy them 2000 to the right."
How to turn a photo or sketch into a drawing
- Click 📎 in the palette, paste with Ctrl+V or drop the file (up to 6 images at once).
- Say what you need: "Redraw this sketch at 1:1, the dimensions are in millimetres".
- If the sketch has dimensions, Claude redraws it from them. If it is a photo or scan without dimensions, it traces the lines right on your computer (the picture stays local), then cleans up, dimensions and labels the result as you ask.
The same tracer is a separate Trace button on the AutoGAD ribbon: live preview, threshold, blur, simplification, insertion at a picked point on the layer you choose — no AI at all.
What to expect on accuracy
- A sketch is redrawn exactly as accurately as its numbers can be read. No numbers — you get a trace.
- A trace of a photo gives what is in the picture: perspective, shadows and paper texture included. It is not a survey.
- The engineer checks and signs; Claude shows everything it is about to draw before drawing it.
Install in 5 minutes
- Download AutoGADSetup.exe (button above), close AutoCAD and run it. No admin rights.
- Paste your Claude key (a minute on the Anthropic site). ChatGPT instead of Claude — an OpenAI key.
- Start AutoCAD → AutoGAD tab → Chat. Open an empty drawing and ask for a plan.
The plugin is free: open source, AGPL-3.0, every version on GitHub. You only pay for the model's answers — usually a few cents; the amount is printed under every answer.
